How to make an appointment here
Book through the official California DMV portal and select El Monte; CDL road tests and behind-the-wheel tests must be scheduled in advance. Our guide to making a California DMV appointment covers the process.
Routine appointments are typically 1–2 weeks out, while CDL road test slots can run 4–6 weeks out. If you only need a counter transaction, the nearby Pasadena office usually has shorter waits.
Wait times & best time to visit
El Monte runs among the longest average waits in the San Gabriel Valley — often 50–75 minutes for walk-ins — largely because of CDL test volume. Compare nearby offices on our California DMV wait times page.
- Arrive 10–15 minutes before your appointment (30 minutes for a CDL or drive test).
- Avoid Mondays and the day after a holiday — the backlog is heaviest then.
- Quietest windows are Thursday and Friday afternoons.
- Wednesday opens at 9 AM, so the morning queue builds quickly.
What to bring
Documents depend on the transaction. The fastest path is our interactive document checklist generator, or browse topic-specific guides:
- REAL ID document checklist — first-time REAL ID applicants.
- First-time driver's license documents.
- New California resident documents.
- Documents for non-citizens and AB 60 applicants.
Payment: this office accepts cash, check, debit, and credit card (a small surcharge applies to credit).
Languages & accessibility
Staff routinely serve English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Mandarin speakers. For other languages, request an interpreter when booking — at least 5 business days ahead.
The building is ADA-compliant, with wheelchair-accessible entrances, ramps, restrooms, and designated parking. Service animals are welcome.
Parking & public transit
Parking. A large free lot serves the office, but it can fill on CDL test mornings. Overflow street parking is available on Mountain View Road.
Transit. The Metro 70 bus stops on Garvey Avenue about a 6-minute walk away, with connections to the El Monte Bus Station and the L Line.
Rideshare. Drop-off is easiest at the main Mountain View Road entrance, away from the CDL test staging area at the rear of the lot.
