The El Monte field office is one of the few Los Angeles–area offices that administers the commercial (CDL) road test, which draws applicants from across the region and keeps it among the busier offices. Alongside CDL testing it offers the full range of services — REAL ID upgrades, vehicle registration, the motorcycle skills test, and behind-the-wheel drive tests. Because of the CDL demand, appointments are required for most transactions, so book ahead or consider a quieter nearby office for routine business.
Getting there

Address & directions

The office is on Mountain View Road just north of Garvey Avenue, near the San Gabriel River and the 10 Freeway. From the 10 Freeway, exit Peck Road and head north; from the 605 Freeway, take Valley Boulevard west to Peck.

CDL road tests run on a tight morning schedule — arrive at least 30 minutes early with your vehicle and paperwork, because a late arrival forfeits the slot and can mean a multi-week rebooking.

Appointments

How to make an appointment here

Book through the official California DMV portal and select El Monte; CDL road tests and behind-the-wheel tests must be scheduled in advance. Our guide to making a California DMV appointment covers the process.

Routine appointments are typically 1–2 weeks out, while CDL road test slots can run 4–6 weeks out. If you only need a counter transaction, the nearby Pasadena office usually has shorter waits.

Timing

Wait times & best time to visit

El Monte runs among the longest average waits in the San Gabriel Valley — often 50–75 minutes for walk-ins — largely because of CDL test volume. Compare nearby offices on our California DMV wait times page.

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes before your appointment (30 minutes for a CDL or drive test).
  • Avoid Mondays and the day after a holiday — the backlog is heaviest then.
  • Quietest windows are Thursday and Friday afternoons.
  • Wednesday opens at 9 AM, so the morning queue builds quickly.

Access

Languages & accessibility

Staff routinely serve English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Mandarin speakers. For other languages, request an interpreter when booking — at least 5 business days ahead.

The building is ADA-compliant, with wheelchair-accessible entrances, ramps, restrooms, and designated parking. Service animals are welcome.

Getting there

Parking & public transit

Parking. A large free lot serves the office, but it can fill on CDL test mornings. Overflow street parking is available on Mountain View Road.

Transit. The Metro 70 bus stops on Garvey Avenue about a 6-minute walk away, with connections to the El Monte Bus Station and the L Line.

Rideshare. Drop-off is easiest at the main Mountain View Road entrance, away from the CDL test staging area at the rear of the lot.
