San Francisco DMV — Fell Street

How to make an appointment here
Book through the official California DMV portal and select Fell Street; the Virtual Field Office can handle some transactions without a visit. Our guide to making a California DMV appointment covers the steps.
As the city's primary office, Fell Street books up — routine appointments often run 2–3 weeks out and Saturday slots longer. If you're flexible, the Daly City and Oakland Claremont offices are nearby alternatives.
Wait times & best time to visit
Fell Street is the busiest office in San Francisco, with real-world waits of 40–70 minutes for walk-ins and shorter for appointment holders. Compare nearby offices on our California DMV wait times page.
- Arrive 10–15 minutes before your appointment — earlier arrivals aren't called sooner.
- Avoid Mondays, Saturdays, and the days after a holiday.
- Quietest windows are mid-week mid-afternoon, roughly 2:00–3:30 PM.
- Wednesday opens at 9 AM, so the morning line forms fast that day.
What to bring
Documents depend on the transaction. The fastest path is our interactive document checklist generator, or browse topic-specific guides:
- REAL ID document checklist — first-time REAL ID applicants.
- First-time driver's license documents.
- New California resident documents.
- Documents for non-citizens and AB 60 applicants.
Payment: this office accepts cash, check, debit, and credit card (a small surcharge applies to credit).
Languages & accessibility
Staff routinely serve English, Spanish, Cantonese, and Tagalog speakers, reflecting the city's large Chinese and Filipino communities. For other languages, request an interpreter when booking — at least 5 business days ahead.
The office is ADA-compliant, with wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and a limited number of designated parking spaces. Service animals are welcome.
Parking & public transit
Parking. A small on-site lot fills early, and street parking around the Panhandle is metered and time-limited. Transit is usually the easier choice here.
Transit. Several Muni bus lines — the 5, 21, and 22 — stop within a 2–5 minute walk on Fell, Hayes, and Fillmore. The closest BART is Civic Center, about 1.5 miles east.
Rideshare. Have your driver use the Fell Street frontage rather than the lot; the one-way streets around the Panhandle make the entrance easy to miss.
Other ways to get this done
Renewals, change of address, and fee payments don't need an office visit.
